How to Generate Quality Telephone Interview Recordings

A large number of calls are received in a customer care service center of mobile service providers, software/hardware development firms, and other business organizations. All these conversations are recorded and converted into text via transcription. These organizations use the transcripts to evaluate customer response. Legal, media and other businesses also need accurate transcripts of telephone interview recordings. Recording quality is a crucial factor in all these cases. Poor recording quality will affect the quality of transcription and ultimately, the purpose for which the transcripts are used. So an important question is: how can you ensure high quality telephone interview recordings? Here are some tips to help:

  • Avoid a Noisy Location – Background noises can affect the quality of recordings and make the transcription task really challenging. The interviewer as well as the interviewee should ideally be in a small room so that the chances of echoes are minimized. Make sure that there are minimal interruptions. The interviewee should not be talking in a noisy environment. Turn off appliances or equipments which cause noise, such as a humming air-conditioner or noisy generator.
  • Quality Audio Mode – A good quality landline is best for recording the audio. Ask the interviewee to not use a speakerphone as it would capture every feeble sound. Plug a telephone pick up microphone to the MIC jack of your dictation recorder. Place the earphone side in your ear so that its sensitive microphone will pick up the interviewee’s voice when the recorder captures your voice. If you or the interviewee uses a mobile phone, then you must use a telephone pickup microphone which can capture sound from both sides. Using VOIP technology like Skype could be inexpensive in the beginning, but the audio quality may vary if the Internet connection is not stable. If you can afford expensive high quality microphones, recording meetings or interviews involving number of people can be done using Skype.
  • Quality Recording Equipment – Use a superior digital recording device to ensure a high quality audio recording. Ensure that your device has back-up batteries so that a power outage will not ruin your interview.
  • Conduct Test Recording – To be on the safe side, conduct a trial run before you start the actual recording. Test recording helps to identify any technical difficulties, particularly in the case of a VOIP call or a cell phone call. If there are any issues, you can take care of them at the outset.
